Each course can be conducted over as little as one or two days. During that time you will complete a sample lecture presentation and complete all the performance requirements for the course ( this will take less time if you have already completed the specialty course prior to the Instructor rating) . You will receive instruction in the proper techniques on how to run and organize these programs. Previous qualification in the specialty as a diver is strongly recommended but not required.

Full details on each program are enclosed.

DEEP DIVING instructor

Teaching the skills and techniques of deep diving do not only benefit divers in planning and executing deep dives, but is an important skill that divers need to learn for all dives. The Deep Diver Specialty course does just that. With the frequent use of EANx, by divers wanting to stay longer ( not necessarily deeper) underwater the need for gas planning is also essential.  With the majority of divers wanting to venture deeper than 18-20m the need for safe, well planned dives are essential.

Many of the most impressive dive locations have special dives below 30 meters such as the Poor Knights and wreck dives such as the Tui and Mikhail Lermontov. Coupled with the PADI Multilevel Specialty Instructor rating you can teach your divers to have the best of both worlds! ( see the details on the ML course )Really they all blend in together.

WRECK DIVING instructor

With out a doubt one of the most popular pastimes for divers world wide. With the increase of Artificial reefs (wrecks) being sunk in New Zealand, wreck diving is fast becoming the quickest growing specialty course around! NO longer are people only interested in “getting a feed” anymore. Divers are now wanting to expand their horizons and while Cray hunting is still a major draw to learning to dive in New Zealand the lure of a sunken ship wreck still brings a whole heap of intrigue, excitement and fun to diving. Wouldn’t you want to be able to offer this program to your Student Divers???

This is also one of the most enjoyable courses to run as a PADI Specialty Instructor! Hey, you get to dive on all these wrecks, get your trip for free AND get paid to do it!

With wrecks like the Tui, Waikato (Tutukaka), Toahoma ( Tauranga), Rainbow Warrior ( Matauri Bay), Michael Lermontov ( Marlborough Sounds) and many many more this will give you loads of choice in determining your open water sites in which to conduct your training!

EANx NITROX  instructor

As a diving professional you are more times than not at a higher risk of DCI. With multiple ascents and repetitive dives whilst training you cannot afford not to be diving on Nitrox!

Also a marvelous way of extending your bottom time to spend much longer doing what you like best! Nitrox is probably the most easiest program to market. With most wrecks lying in the 25-30 meter range you can complement your training wonderfully by extending your customers bottom time ( also enjoyment!!) with the use of Nitrox. This Specialty rating really is an important string to add to your “Instructional Bow”. With the added flexibility of now being able to combine EANx training open water dives with other specialty courses ( Wreck, Deep etc ) you can really emphasize value. A DEFINITE MUST!  ( Also a prerequisite for the Rebreather Instructor)

U/W PHOTOGRAPHY instructor

The amount of divers increasing their interest in capturing the wonders of the underwater world is expanding, Especially since the advent of the digital camera! So this means that they will need someone to teach them how to effectively take pictures underwater.

There's a wide range of underwater camera systems available to suit almost any price range but many techniques needed for crisp, clear underwater pictures remain the same. These techniques are covered during your PADI Underwater Photography specialty course.

UNDERWATER NATURALIST instructor

“What do you call that red striped, long whiskered, black spotted thingamybob??” Sound familiar?? Now your student divers will be asking YOU that same question!!

The undersea environment varies greatly from area to area but no more so than in it's inhabitants. The ability to recognize and identify various aquatic life in your local area is important not just for personal satisfaction, but also to enhance your student divers awareness of the environment. Remember not all divers will be interested in learning about the aquatic realm, but you should have a good broad understanding of the ocean environment for those who do!

NIGHT DIVING instructor

Now no longer a core dive for the Adv o/w course, but still a great way to introduce people to different environments. Many divers who have lost the spark for diving have regained it after night diving! With most specialty dives being able to be conducted at night will give you an excellent chance to promote this specialty. Photographers, nature lovers EVEN hunters and collectors can get great value out of learning to dive at night. Weekend liveaboard trips normally give divers the opportunity to dive at night, but still are reluctant to partake in this pastime. This is due to apprehension of the unknown and having an instructor that can alleviate this apprehension will install confidence in divers to undertake this fantastic aspect of diving.

UNDERWATER NAVIGATION instructor

An essential specialty for every Instructor. Being one of the two core dives of the Advanced open Water Diver Course. By being able to confidently organize and market these programs will enhance your repeat business after conducting Advanced Open Water Diver Courses. There are a lot of fun ways to get people (your customers) enthusiastic about knowing where they are going (and have been) underwater! This program will not only enhance YOUR own navigational skills, but also give you important hints on how to set up sites for not only your Advanced Open Water navigation dive but also for the specialty course!

Being able to navigate effectively in the underwater world not only allows you more control of your dive, it allows for more effective dive planning, use less air and generally increases the enjoyment of your dive by always knowing where you are in relation to the boat or shore.( and reducing those Loooooong swims back to the boat.)

Equipment specialist instructor

The Equipment specialist course is intended to familiarize divers with the operation and maintenance of their diving equipment. If you are already a certified service technician by a recognized equipment manufacturer then you can directly apply to PADI for your Equipment Specailist Instructor rating. If however you are not, this program will show you how to teach this course. It will not enable to service gear but instruct your candidates how to maintain and look after their diving equipment.

DRIFT DIVING instructor

Probably one of the most frequent diving activities undertaken in NZ! Ever dived for scallops?? If you have then chances are that you have completed a drift dive.

This program is another important speciality. Speaking specifically to the local market here in NZ, teaching someone how to safely use a float and line reel while scallop diving will increase their safety and reduce the number of deaths that scallop diving claim each year.

Proper and safe training in this will show the boat person exactly where divers  are and also provide a visual ascent line to use at the end of the dive. (The scallop bag can also be attached to the end of the line and retrieved by the boatman to increase safety in attempting to lift the heavy bag off the bottom by the diver).

SEARCH and RECOVERY Instructor

For as long as man has been on the water, he has also been losing things of value under it. While some objects are small enough that they can simply be brought up by hand, many items lost are large and require special techniques and equipment to be recovered.

The PADI Search and Recovery Instructor specialty program goes through the many different techniques that will enable you to effectively teach someone how to locate an object that has been lost underwater be it a ring or a sunken boat!! Once you have been able to locate the object, you will then have the opportunity to practice using a variety of equipment configurations to bring the item safely to the surface.

MULTI-LEVEL DIVING instructor

Dive computers are used by the majority of divers these days, but unfortunately most of them do not know how properly utilize them. This Instructor program will not only enhance your understanding of dive computers, multi-level diving and multi tissue compartment models but also help you understand that this course is an important program for your student divers. By being able to fully understand the parameters of multilevel diving you will find it much easier portray this to your student divers.

The multilevel diver course is also an excellent introduction to your Divemaster candidates in the use of the RDP Wheel.

Altitude DIVING instructor

While the majority of diving does take place in the ocean environment, many excellent dive sites exist inland in freshwater lakes. In order to safely dive in these lakes that are above 300 meters of altitude, we are required to follow special rules and also use special tables to calculate our dives. Even diving in a lake that is at relatively low altitude such as lake Taupo can have a great effect on our dive calculations. The PADI Altitude Diver Specialty course will equip your students with the skills and knowledge to dive this unique aquatic environment. This course is very important because there are many sites in New Zealand where we need to drive over mountain ranges in order to get home ( and that means going up to altitude after diving). The reduction in ambient pressure could result in Decompression Illness! As safe divers this course is STRONGLY recommended!

SCR Rebreather instructor

With technology heading these days you cannot afford not to get into the rebreather age. Rebreathers are not a thing of the future but a thing of NOW!!! Not only having a good understanding of their function and features and benefits but also being able to teach people to dive safely on them have huge benefits. There are very few Rebreather Instructors in the country and the interest is definitely growing.

You will have to complete the specialty course first before you can complete the Instructor program. But this can be done in conjunction with eachother.

During your SCR Instructor program you will learn not only how they function but also learn about other units available on the market both semi and closed circuit. This information will be of great value to you  so you can show the benefits of all types of units and show the importance of simplicity the Drager Dolphin 1 offers!

The Dolphin 1 is ideal for the serious recreational and professional diver. It is a semi closed oxygen enriched air Nitrox Rebreather, giving the diver longer no decompression times and bring the diver a completely silent diving experience with minimal exhaust bubble noise. This silence allows underwater photographers, researchers, cinematographers or just interested nature lovers to get closer to nature than ever before.

DPV instructor

Diver Propulsion Vehicles are great fun and can turn a boring dive into a fun filled exciting experience. But if not used correctly can be extremely dangerous. All people interested in using DPV’s need to be trained in how to use them. Lets face it, it wouldn’t be very difficult to get someone enthusiastic in using a DPV.

During your DPV Instructor course you will learn how to utilize this rating and maximize student diver enjoyment.
